Symbols and colors in African clothing

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

If you thought that African people just randomly choose their clothes, based on their personal likes a dislikes, then you are wrong. Every color or icon present in the cloth of Africans has a symbolism. For example, Adinkra is the name of the African clothing which is worn at funerals. These cloths usually come in very dark colors like brown, black, brick red etc, which symbolize death and grief. On occasions of happiness the Africans wear bright colored Adinkra clothes, mostly in blue, white, and yellow.

Another specialty amongst the Africans is that they have diverse views about a particular color merely based on their location. For example while the color red symbolizes courage and braveness for the Africans of a particular region, the same color symbolizes position of the chief in some other region. Every color of the African clothing has its own significance. For example, green stands for fertility, white for purity, and so on.
